Bare Brick and Previously Painted Brick Are Different

Previously painted brick is inspected for loose coating, chalking, cracks and moisture-related failure before it is repainted. If brick has already been painted, it can often be repainted with your typical exterior latex paint.

Bare brick is highly porous and requires products designed to bond to masonry. Even within masonry paints, there are different products for different scenarios,

Once bare brick is painted, returning it to its original appearance is difficult, so the decision should be made carefully.

Our Brick Painting Process

  • Inspect the brick, mortar, moisture conditions and existing coatings.
  • Identify repairs or active water problems that must be corrected first.
  • Clean dirt, mildew, chalking and loose material from the surface.
  • Complete minor paint-related repairs included in the written proposal.
  • Prime bare masonry or problem areas with a compatible masonry primer.
  • Apply finish coats selected for the surface and weather exposure.
  • Inspect the mortar joints, brick texture and overall coverage before cleanup and the final walkthrough.

Moisture Problems Must Be Corrected First

Paint should not be used to cover active moisture, deteriorated mortar or serious masonry damage.

Efflorescence, recurring stains or failing coatings can indicate water moving through the wall. Those causes may need to be corrected by the appropriate contractor before the brick is painted.
