If your brick has never been painted, the process is different. A first-time brick painting project typically requires three coats—one coat of masonry primer followed by two finish coats of paint—to achieve proper adhesion, uniform coverage, and lasting performance.

Once brick has been properly primed and painted, future repaints are generally much more straightforward. In most cases, high-quality exterior latex paint can be used for maintenance coats, provided the existing coating is sound and the surface is properly prepared.
